The Roman road that gave the village its name Curiosity · Calzada de Oropesa, La Campana de Oropesa, Toledo Image of Calzada de Oropesa, not of the place itself. The place name Calzada de Oropesa comes from the Latin calciata, paved, referring to the old Roman road that crossed the area linking Augusta Emerita, Caesarobriga and Toledo. After annexing the depopulated medieval settlement of Carrascalejo, the town was known for a time as La Calzada y Carrascalejo; when that settlement declined, the simple name La Calzada prevailed, to which de Oropesa was later added to distinguish it from other towns of the same name and to recall its link with the former county.
