The limekilns that gave the village its name Curiosity · Calera y Chozas, La Campana de Oropesa, Toledo Image of Calera y Chozas, not of the place itself. The name Calera comes from the limestone quarries that were worked in the district to produce lime, an activity that gave rise to the settlement itself and shaped its economy. The limestone extracted here was used as building material in works throughout the area, including the Collegiate Church of Talavera de la Reina. The prosperity of this extractive activity is reflected in the growth of the population: around 1400 the settlement had about a hundred residents, a figure that had risen to 250 households by 1576.
