Alberche del Caudillo Curiosity · Calera y Chozas, La Campana de Oropesa, Toledo The municipality is made up of two settlements about four kilometres apart: the town of Calera y Chozas and the colonisation village of Alberche del Caudillo. It was built by the Instituto Nacional de Colonización and inaugurated on 5 October 1956, together with the neighbouring Talavera la Nueva, within the Alberche Irrigation Zone; 270 settler families were installed there. The name refers to the Alberche river, whose waters irrigate the plain through the Bajo del Alberche canal, and to the title of Caudillo held by Francisco Franco, under whose dictatorship the town was founded. The land was divided into 437 farming units of 4 to 5 hectares and 202 family gardens of half a hectare for agricultural labourers.
