The name Azután comes from the Arabic Burŷ al-Sulṭān, tower of the sultan. In 1135 Alfonso VII handed the tower of Borge Azután to a Mozarabic nobleman, and in 1274 the abbess of the convent of San Clemente granted the settlement charter.
