Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Alcolea de Tajo

Monument · Alcolea de Tajo, La Campana de Oropesa, Toledo

The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, in Alcolea de Tajo, in the Toledo district of La Campana de Oropesa, is a 15th-century church in Mudéjar Gothic style and the main monument of the municipality, next to the hamlet that overlooks the Tagus. It stands out for its slender four-storey tower with semicircular arches and for a coffered wooden ceiling that springs from a semicircular stone arch. It preserves a baptismal font carved in stone from the 11th century and an image of Christ, known as El Gringo, brought from Peru in the 16th century by a bishop of Lima who was a native of the village. In 1763, Agustín Contreras donated a large, finely worked lamp to the church, along with an altarpiece and liturgical objects.
