The Community of Villa y Tierra of Atienza Historical milestone · Atienza, Serranía de Guadalajara, Guadalajara Alfonso VII granted a charter to Atienza in 1149 and organized around it a Community of Town and Land that came to group together 131 villages over some 2,500 square kilometres, and which for centuries was the structure that governed the pastures, woodlands and councils of the sierra. It enjoyed great prosperity until the 14th century, when it came to have as many as 8,000 inhabitants, before entering a slow decline at the expense of the rise of neighbouring Sigüenza. As the Partido de Atienza it belonged to the Intendencia of Soria, within Old Castile, until the new provincial division of 1833 incorporated it into the province of Guadalajara, today in Castilla-La Mancha. 1149 Photo: José Ibáñez (CC BY 3.0) What to see and do in Atienza
