Festivities of San Matías de Fontanar Activity · Fontanar, La Campiña, Guadalajara Image of Fontanar, not of the place itself. Patronal festivities, held on the weekend closest to 14 May, with verbenas, encierros, mass and a procession in honour of San Matías, together with the traditional luminaria bonfire in memory of the village's old charcoal burners. On Friday night several trailers of firewood are burned, a gesture representing the tribute that the woodcutters of the hills traditionally paid to their patron saint. Tradition recalls that until the mid-20th century the holm oak wood of Fontanar was an important source of charcoal production.
