El Casar, a free council since 1592 Curiosity · El Casar, La Campiña, Guadalajara Image of El Casar, not of the place itself. El Casar traces its founding back to 1085, during the resettlements that followed the Castilian conquest. Over the centuries it belonged to the royal lordship, then passed to the archbishops of Toledo until the 16th century and later returned to the Crown, which sold the town to the Duke of Salerno; he in turn resold it to the Negrón family, who established an entailed estate. When that entailed estate came to an end in 1592, El Casar began to function as a free council, a status it has kept from then until today.
