Torija Village · Torija, La Alcarria, Guadalajara Torija is a municipality of La Alcarria, in Guadalajara, with 1,877 inhabitants, at the crossroads of routes towards Aragon. The original settlement stood on the hill where the ermita del Amparo now stands, with remains from the Iron Age and the Early and Late Middle Ages; in 1445 the Navarrese of Captain Juan de Puelles held out there for seven years against Castilian attacks, after which the settlement was razed and rebuilt at its present site. It is dominated by a square fortress of the Mendoza family, from the 15th century, with three towers and a keep that housed Charles V and Philip II. It served as a refuge for Juan Martín el Empecinado in the War of Independence, until he himself blew it up so the French could not occupy it; restored, it now houses the museum of the Viaje a la Alcarria.
