Mondéjar Village · Mondéjar, La Alcarria, Guadalajara Mondéjar is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 2,918 inhabitants (INE 2025) and winemaking activity: it gives its name to a denomination of origin recognised in 1996 and limited to twenty municipalities, the smallest in Spain, with whites from malvar and macabeo grapes and reds from cencibel, cabernet sauvignon and syrah grown on limestone soils. On the plaza Mayor stands the church of Santa María Magdalena, Gothic and Renaissance, a Monumento Histórico-Artístico Nacional (a former Spanish heritage-protection category, equivalent to national monument) since 1931; its 16th-century altarpiece, destroyed in the Civil War, was recreated through public subscription. It also preserves the ruins of the convent of San Antonio, the work of Lorenzo Vázquez and a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). Its festivities of the Santísimo Cristo del Calvario, in September, include a procession declared Fiesta de Interés Turístico Provincial (an official category of tourism recognition in Spain).
