Zafrilla, the highest municipal seat in Castilla-La Mancha Curiosity · Zafrilla, Serranía Alta, Cuenca Image of Zafrilla, not of the place itself. Zafrilla, in the Serranía Alta of Cuenca, has its town centre at 1,425 metres above sea level, the highest among the municipal capitals of Castilla-La Mancha. Today it has barely 59 inhabitants, far from the 569 it reached in the mid-19th century. Already in 1546 Juan Villuga's road guide listed it as a stop between Cuenca and Tortosa, and in 1850 Pascual Madoz described it surrounded by pine forests. On its territory rises the Alto del Oso, at 1,827 metres, next to the Zafrilla river and about a hundred springs, with deer, wild boar, roe deer, golden eagles and griffon vultures. Winters are harsh, with 160 frost days a year; in January 2021 it reached -24.1 degrees after storm Filomena. Its patron saint is Saint Augustine, on 28 August, with bull runs (encierros) by the Hermanos Mora. Photo: 19Tarrestnom65 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Zafrilla
