What to see and do in Huélamo

Huélamo
Village
Huélamo is a municipality in the Serranía Alta district, in the province of Cuenca, perched at 1,316 meters of altitude on the left bank of the river Júcar. In Arab times it was a defensive enclave set on a steep hill, of which it preserves castle ruins and streets laid out as stairways owing to the steepness of the slope; the cemetery, on the outskirts, offers a panoramic view of the surroundings, covered in box trees. Its parish church is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, and the soldier Julián Romero was born in the village in 1518; he rose to Maestre de Campo, knight of the Order of Santiago and member of the Council of War in Flanders. It lives from agriculture and, since the 1990s, also from rural tourism; it has 68 inhabitants.
