What to see and do in Valdemanco del Esteras

Valdemanco del Esteras
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Valle de Alcudia, in the province of Ciudad Real, born of the settlement of millers and beekeepers beside the flour mills of the Río Frío, documented since 1575 and today in ruins; its parish church of the Virgen del Valle, of the eighteenth century, depended on that of Saceruela until municipal independence in 1833. The district, extremely hilly, is closed to the south by the Osa range, of 853 metres, and is crossed by the river Esteras, a tributary of the Zújar, between ash groves and ferns that have traditionally sustained local beekeeping.
Parish Church of the Virgen del Valle
Monument
An 18th-century church, dependent on the parish of Saceruela until municipal independence in 1833.
Mills of the Río Frío
Monument
The mills of the Río Frío, documented since 1575, gave rise to Valdemanco del Esteras: the village was born when a group of millers and beekeepers decided to settle beside them, on the banks of the river. Today only their ruins remain, witness to the town's first settlement.
Bridge of el río Esteras
Monument
A 19th-century bridge that crosses the main watercourse of the municipal district.
Mountain range of la Osa
Nature
Mountain range south of the municipal boundary, reaching 853 metres in altitude, in an extremely mountainous landscape of valleys and river plains. Its highest point, the cerro de la Osa, lies on the boundary with the municipality of Almadén; together with the sierras to the north of the municipality, it forms a range hovering around 750-850 metres in altitude.
Esteras River
Nature
The río Esteras, the main watercourse of Valdemanco del Esteras and a tributary of the Zújar within the Guadiana basin, rises in the municipality of Saceruela at the confluence of several streams flowing down from the sierras of Almadén and Saceruela, and runs about 65 kilometres from east to west until it flows into the reservoir of La Serena. Together with its tributary the rivera de Riofrío, it forms part of the Special Area of Conservation Ríos de la cuenca media del Guadiana y laderas vertientes, for its good stands of ash groves and its populations of calandino and pardilla, two fish joined by communities of pez fraile, jarabugo, boga de río and barbo comizo. Its banks, with ash groves, ferns and varied flora, have traditionally sustained local beekeeping.
Millers and beekeepers
Curiosity
The village grew out of the settlement of millers and beekeepers beside the mills of the Río Frío. Madoz's dictionary of 1849 describes 43 houses and an economy based on flax and goat's cheese.
