Church of San Antonio Monument · Villanueva de San Carlos, Sierra Morena, Ciudad Real Image of Villanueva de San Carlos, not of the place itself. The church of San Antonio de Padua, in Villanueva de San Carlos (Ciudad Real), is a single-nave church with walls of volcanic stone and brick masonry, a construction method characteristic of the volcanic zone of the Campo de Calatrava. According to the dictionary of Pascual Madoz, in the mid-19th century the building was an annex of the parish of Calzada de Calatrava and was served by a lieutenant; it had been built in 1832 by the architect José Solís, at the expense of the Marquis of Santa Cruz, commander of the Obrería.
