In Villanueva de San Carlos (Sierra Morena, Ciudad Real), residents of the surrounding area still call it El Pardillo, the name of the old dehesa on which the town was settled. As early as the mid-19th century, the Diccionario de Madoz recorded that the town was commonly called this because it had been founded on a quinto or estate of that name, then the property of don Francisco de las Barcenas.
