Reservoir of Cíjara Nature · Anchuras, Montes de Ciudad Real, Ciudad Real The Cíjara reservoir was built in 1956 on the Guadiana river, as part of the Plan Badajoz, on the boundary between the provinces of Cáceres and Badajoz; its waters, which flood 6,565 hectares with a 45-kilometre-long tail, reach as far as the exclave of Anchuras, in Ciudad Real. It lies within the Cíjara National Hunting Reserve, covering more than 25,000 hectares, which shelters deer, wild boar, otters, eagles, lynxes and black storks, and is one of the best fishing reserves in Extremadura, with pike, black bass and barbel. Its surroundings of Mediterranean woodland and scrub allow for swimming, boating, hiking and birdwatching. When the water level drops, the 14th-century Mesta bridge appears, over which the Cañada Real de Segovia droving route used to run.
