What to see and do in Llanos del Caudillo

Llanos del Caudillo
Village
Llanos del Caudillo is a municipality in La Mancha, in Ciudad Real, with 651 inhabitants (INE 2025), one of the nine settlements that the Instituto Nacional de Colonización built in the province. It lies in sector I of the irrigated area of La Mancha, between Alcázar de San Juan and Manzanares, and arose thanks to aquifer 23, discovered in the early 1950s; the General Plan for its colonisation was approved on 27 November 1953. It was part of Manzanares until it became independent in 1999. Its name, referring to Francisco Franco, has been controversial since the Historical Memory Law, which provides for the removal of names glorifying those who rose up against the Government of the Republic. Its parish church presides over the layout, following the models of those colonisation settlements.

Curiosity
Llanos del Caudillo is one of the nine settlements that the National Colonisation Institute built in the province of Ciudad Real, brought into being thanks to the water of Aquifer 23, discovered in the 1950s. It separated from Manzanares in 1999.

Nature
The irrigation that gave rise to this town comes from Aquifer 23, the great underground reserve of the Mancha Húmeda whose overexploitation has shaped the recent history of the Manchegan wetlands.
