The olive oil of the Campo de Montiel Curiosity · Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos, Campo de Montiel, Ciudad Real Image of Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos, not of the place itself. The oil produced in the olive groves of Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos is protected by the protected designation of origin Aceite Campo de Montiel, whose production area covers 26 municipalities in the province of Ciudad Real and spans almost the entire historic Campo de Montiel region. The European Commission recognised the designation in June 2010 and included these oils in the list of quality agri-food products; more than 8,000 farmers are enrolled in it, across a cultivation area of more than 34,000 hectares. To carry the seal, extra virgin olive oil must meet strict regulations: maximum acidity of 0.5 degrees and a peroxide index no higher than 15. It is used to prepare local dishes such as gachamiga, ajo grande and rinrán. Photo: B25es (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos
