The festival of the Cristo de la Misericordia, the most important celebration in Castellar de Santiago, centres on 14 September, although it begins the evening before with bonfires: every 13 September, at nine at night, residents light bonfires in the middle of the streets and afterwards prepare communal barbecues with chops, sardines and other food. On the main day, the image of the Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia is carried in a morning procession accompanied by a music band, amid shotgun blasts and firecrackers. The festival closes on the night of 16 September with a fireworks display, and in recent years it has been gaining prominence among visitors from outside the village.
