The church of Saint John the Baptist, a 17th-century Baroque temple under whose dedication the building is known, is the main monument of Pozuelo de Calatrava, in the Campo de Calatrava district, with a single nave. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), with the category of monument, on 8 October 1991, by a decree published that same month in the Diario Oficial de Castilla-La Mancha. The temple is described both in the Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico by Pascual Madoz and in the Diccionario histórico geográfico de la provincia de Ciudad Real, by Inocente Hervás y Buendía, which attest to its antiquity within the municipality's religious complex.
