Hermitage of el Santísimo Cristo de Miguelturra Monument · Miguelturra, Campo de Calatrava, Ciudad Real The hermitage of the Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia, popularly known in Miguelturra (Ciudad Real) as the Torre Gorda, houses the image of the town's patron saint. It was built following some 18th-century miracles, when a painting of Christ on the cross displayed in the old town hall began to sweat blood, a fact attested to by visitors of the Order of Calatrava. Its design was the work of Antonio Berete, a disciple of Ventura Rodríguez; work began in 1772 and finished in 1815, with a dome rising to 50 metres. Damage caused by the weather forced the dome to be replaced, and the church reopened in 1915. During the Civil War it was used as a warehouse and garage, and its original images were lost. It is declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a heritage-protection designation). Photo: Javier martin (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Miguelturra
