The Tirteafuera River Nature · Argamasilla de Calatrava, Campo de Calatrava, Ciudad Real A river with an Arabic name distorted by popular etymology, which rises in the Sierra de Calatrava and flows entirely through the province of Ciudad Real, in an east-northwest direction and parallel to the Guadiana, as far as the vicinity of Abenójar, where it turns north forming numerous meanders before flowing into the left bank of that river. Its basin, declared a Site of Community Importance, covers around 968 square kilometres and gives its name to the Tirteafuera depression; besides Argamasilla de Calatrava, it passes through Villamayor de Calatrava and through the town that gives it its name, Tirteafuera. Its flow is scarce and polluted, and it tends to dry up in periods of drought owing to agricultural overexploitation. It is mentioned in Don Quixote, in the character of Doctor Pedro Recio y Agüero de Tirteafuera. Photo: javier martin (Public domain) What to see and do in Argamasilla de Calatrava
