Sphinx of Haches Monument · Bogarra, Sierra del Segura, Albacete The Esfinge de Haches (Sphinx of Haches) was found by chance during farm work near the hamlet of Casas de Haches, at the Los Cucos site, close to the Torre de Haches, of Almohad date. Carved on a block in high relief, it has features reminiscent of archaic Greek figures, such as almond-shaped eyes and a subtle smile; the body, feline and winged, lies sideways on a thick plinth, while the head, with a female face, turns to one side, breaking the usual frontality of Iberian sculpture. It is dated to between the late 6th and early 5th centuries BC, and its connection to other pieces from the site suggests it belonged to a funerary monument. The original has been kept at the Museo de Albacete since 1947, and a replica presides over the town square.
