The municipality separated from Alcaraz in 1857 and is today one of the least populated in the region, with 308 inhabitants recorded in the 2025 census and a density of barely 4.86 inhabitants per square kilometre over an area of 63.40 km². It lies at about 710 metres of altitude and 26 kilometres from the provincial capital, and also includes the hamlet of Casa Hita-El Cuartico.
