Tower of el Tardón Monument · Alcaraz, Sierra de Alcaraz y Campo de Montiel, Albacete The Torre del Tardón, also called the Council Tower or Clock Tower, stands on the plaza Mayor of Alcaraz, directly opposite the Torre de la Trinidad, and together with it forms the main icon of the town. A hexagonal tower housing the municipal clock, civil in character although built on the site of the vanished convent of Santo Domingo, it was begun in 1555 by Bartolomé Flores, and Andrés de Vandelvira, born in Alcaraz, worked on it until 1568, giving it his Mannerist style in the decoration and the division of its stages. It houses the municipal clock, the work of the local clockmaker Bautista, dated 1567, and a bell of 1447 that used to ring only now and then for solemn occasions, whence its name.
