Image of Puerto de la Cruz, not of the place itself.

Following the interest shown by European travellers and scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt, Sabin Berthelot and William Wilde in the climate of the Valle de La Orotava, the archipelago's first sanatorium was established in Puerto de la Cruz in 1886, and in 1890 the Hotel Taoro opened, one of the first large hotels in the Canary Islands, turning the city into Spain's first tourist resort of European standing.
