Casa Fuerte de Adeje Monument · Adeje, Tenerife - Suroeste, Santa Cruz de Tenerife A fortification ordered built by Pedro Ponte, authorised in 1555 and raised in 1556 to defend the coast of Adeje from the frequent pirate and corsair attacks. Almost square in plan and covering around 7,200 square metres, it included a keep, storehouses, granaries, stables, a forge, an oven and an oratory, as well as housing for administrators and workers. For three centuries it was the political, economic and social centre of the lordship of Adeje, which Juan Bautista de Ponte y Pagés obtained by royal decree of King Philip IV on 21 November 1655; in 1666 Charles II granted the family the title of Marquis of Adeje. It is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). 1556 Photo: Photograph by Mike Peel (www.mikepeel.net). (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Adeje
