On 5 May 1706 the Trevejo volcano (Montaña Negra) erupted; seven lava flows devastated and buried much of the town and, in particular, its port, which was completely covered. There were no fatalities, but merchants emigrated to Puerto de la Cruz, which became the island's main port. The land reclaimed from the sea by the lava later gave rise to the natural pools of El Caletón.
