According to tradition, the soldier Antón Vallejo, a survivor of the first battle of Acentejo in 1494, promised San Antonio Abad he would build a hermitage in his honour on the same site if he came out alive; this is the origin of one of the oldest cults in the Canary Islands. The church, remodelled and extended in 1881 and 1982, was raised to the rank of sanctuary by the Diocese of Tenerife in 2020.
