At the island's highest point (2,426 metres), within the municipality of Garafía, the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias opened this observatory in 1985, home to, among other instruments, the Gran Telescopio Canarias, with a diameter of 10.4 metres. Its location benefits from the protection of the night sky mandated on the island since the 1988 Sky Law and from the later declaration of La Palma as a Starlight Reserve in 2012.
