Roman Theatre of Zaragoza Monument · Zaragoza, Comarca Central, Zaragoza The Roman theatre of Caesaraugusta, in the centre of Zaragoza, was built in the first half of the 1st century, during the reigns of Tiberius and Claudius, following the model of the Theatre of Marcellus in Rome; with capacity for around six thousand spectators and an area of 7,000 square metres, it is one of the largest in Roman Hispania. It remained in use until the 3rd century, when its materials were reused to build walls, and it lay buried under later buildings until excavations in 1972 brought it back to light. It had an independent access to the orchestra reserved for the authorities, an exceptional feature among the theatres of Roman Hispania. Declared a site of cultural interest in 2001, it can now be visited at the Museum of the Theatre of Caesaraugusta. Photo: CARLOS TEIXIDOR CADENAS (CC BY 4.0) What to see and do in Zaragoza
