Flood of the Aguilón ravine Historical milestone · Aguilón, Campo de Cariñena, Zaragoza Image of Aguilón, not of the place itself. A sudden flash flood of the barranco del Fresno, on whose slope the village sits, devastated Aguilón on 20 September 1921, after days of rain that made that month the wettest in nearly a century in the Zaragoza area. Seventeen residents died, forty houses were destroyed and more than two hundred people lost their homes; the village was left cut off, without electricity and with its two halves separated by the waters. The flood, which took the name of Aguilón as the worst-affected locality, also damaged Azuara and Herrera de los Navarros and, further downstream, reached in Zaragoza the highest flow ever recorded on the Huerva, with flooding as far as the Basílica del Pilar. In 2021 the town council commemorated the centenary with a monument to the victims. 1921 Photo: 19Tarrestnom65 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Aguilón
