Roman Villa of La Malena and Mosaics of Azuara Nature · Azuara, Campo de Belchite, Zaragoza Image of Azuara, not of the place itself. La Malena is an archaeological site located in Azuara, corresponding to a Roman villa inhabited between the 1st and 5th centuries, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) as an area of archaeological interest; discovered in 1988, it was excavated until 1992. The work identified a 4th-century peristyle-type villa with a quadrangular plan about 50 metres to a side around a central courtyard with a pool and a columned portico, and brought to light more than 1000 square metres of mosaics, as well as sculptural remains and domestic objects. Notable among them is the mosaic of the Wedding of Cadmus and Harmony, a masterpiece of Roman mosaic art in Hispania. Lack of investment put its conservation at risk, leading to the creation of the Asociación de Amigos de La Malena. Photo: Ecelan (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Azuara
