Battle of Calanda of 1833 Historical milestone · Calanda, Bajo Aragón, Teruel Image of Calanda, not of the place itself. The Battle of Calanda was one of the episodes of the First Carlist War, which began after the pretender Carlos refused to swear loyalty to María Cristina de Borbón. On 6 December 1833, in the early stages of the conflict, liberal forces under Colonel Linares defeated, near the Santa Bárbara hermitage on the outskirts of the town, the Carlist bands of Rafael Ram de Víu, who fell back to the Calanda trenches before being captured; the liberals occupied the town on 10 December. Ram de Víu managed to escape but was captured on 27 December in Manzanera, tried and shot in Teruel on 12 January 1834. 1833 Photo: José Antonio Bielsa Arbiol (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Calanda
