Rock Art of the Vero River Curiosity · Colungo, Somontano de Barbastro, Huesca Image of Colungo, not of the place itself. The rock art of the Vero River is part of the Vero River Cultural Park, in Somontano de Barbastro, which extends across nine municipalities in the province of Huesca, including Colungo. It comprises more than sixty rock shelters with prehistoric paintings of the Mediterranean Basin, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. Most of the representations, 85%, correspond to the schematic style of the Neolithic; 14% are in the Levantine style of the Mesolithic, and barely 1% come from Upper Palaeolithic hunters. In Colungo is the Vero River Rock Art Centre, which organises guided visits to several of these shelters, set within a landscape that also preserves mills, bridges and shepherds' huts.
