Landscape of the Aragón-Catalonia Canal in Esplús Nature · Esplús, La Litera, Huesca Image of Esplús, not of the place itself. The Canal de Aragón y Cataluña irrigates in Esplús a municipality whose fodder made the comarca one of Spain's largest zones for fattening cattle, through the Esplús irrigation channel, 11.48 kilometres long. The canal, already called for in a petition of 1782 and promoted at the end of the 19th century by Joaquín Costa, began construction on 23 October 1896 and was inaugurated by Alfonso XIII on 2 March 1906; with 124 kilometres between Huesca and Lérida, it irrigates some 104,850 hectares, the second largest irrigated area in the Ebro basin.
