The General Cortes of 1528 Historical milestone · Monzón, Cinca Medio, Huesca Image of Monzón, not of the place itself. In 1528 King Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles V, gathered in the Huesca town of Monzón, head town of the Cinca Medio district, the General Courts of the overseas kingdoms of the Crown of Aragon, presided over by himself. It was one of the few general courts of the Principality of Catalonia in which the arms granted a subsidy to the monarch without new constitutions being legislated. During those sessions, Charles V received the personal challenge sent to him by Francis I of France, amid rivalry for dominance over Italy. 1528 Photo: Zarateman (CC0) What to see and do in Monzón
