What to see and do in Estepa

Estepa
Village
Carthaginian Astapa withstood the Roman siege until, according to Livy, its inhabitants chose collective suicide rather than surrender. As Roman Ostippo it was a road junction mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary. Ferdinand III conquered it in 1241, seven years before Seville, and in 1886 the regent Queen María Cristina granted it the title of city.
Marquesado de Estepa
Historical milestone
In 1559 Philip II reincorporated Estepa into the royal domain and sold it for 800,000 silver reales to the Genoese banker Adán Centurión; his son Marco received the title of marquis of Estepa in 1564. The town's historic ensemble was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural on 3 June 1965.
Los mantecados de Estepa
Food and drink
Estepa's mantecado (crumbly shortbread) industry was born in 1899, when Micaela Ruiz Téllez, known as 'la Colchona,' founded a family business making mantecados with a perfected recipe that gave rise to today's concentration of Christmas-sweet factories.
Torre del Homenaje del Alcázar de Estepa
Monument
Keep of the former citadel of Estepa, on the Cerro de San Cristóbal, the city's original site.

Monument
16th-century church located in the historic-artistic ensemble of Estepa.
Estepa, de la conquista cristiana a la Orden de Santiago
Historical milestone
Fernando III the Saint conquered Estepa in 1241; in 1267 Alfonso X the Wise granted the town to the Order of Santiago.

Curiosity
From Estepa, on clear days, Seville, Córdoba, Málaga and even the peaks of the Sierra Nevada can be seen, earning it the nickname "Balcony of Andalusia".
El único escudo de España con interrogación
Curiosity
The coat of arms of Estepa, adopted on 27 July 1676, includes the motto "Ostippo ¿Quid Ultra?", the only one in Spain with a question mark.
Micaela Ruiz Téllez, "La Colchona"
Curiosity
Micaela Ruiz Téllez, known as "La Colchona", is credited with launching the mantecado (shortbread) industry in Estepa in 1899.
