Designed by the Berlin architect Jürgen Mayer, winner of a competition with 65 proposals, the laminated-wood structure was opened on 27 March 2011 over the Plaza de la Encarnación. Preliminary excavations uncovered Roman and Andalusi remains, now displayed in the Antiquarium museum beneath the structure itself.
