Coria del Río y los descendientes del samurái Historical milestone · Coria del Río, Comarca Metropolitana de Sevilla, Seville Image of Coria del Río, not of the place itself. In the 17th century the embassy of the Japanese samurai and diplomat Hasekura Tsunenaga stopped at Coria del Río; part of his retinue stayed in the Seville area and adopted Christian surnames, among them 'Japón,' still present in the town today. A 2017 study nevertheless ruled out that today's bearers of the surname are genetically descended from deserters of that Keicho embassy. In 1992 Japan gave Coria a statue of Hasekura, and the then crown prince Naruhito visited the town in 2013. Photo: CarlosVdeHabsburgo (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Coria del Río
