Castilleja de la Cuesta y la muerte de Hernán Cortés Historical milestone · Castilleja de la Cuesta, Comarca Metropolitana de Sevilla, Seville Image of Castilleja de la Cuesta, not of the place itself. The conquistador Hernán Cortés died in 1547 in a mansion on Calle Real in this town, built in the 16th century and today home to a school (run by Irish nuns since 1889). The municipality, reconquered by Ferdinand III in 1248 and a commandery of the Order of Santiago from 1267, has 17,074 inhabitants (2025) in just 2.16 km², one of the most densely populated in Andalusia (7,904.63 inhabitants/km²).
