The first settlers of La Luisiana, recruited by the German Johann Kaspar von Thürriegel, came mainly from northeastern France and southwestern Germany, with Belgians, Dutch, Swiss, Austrians, and Italians also present; the town still preserves French- and German-derived surnames among its townspeople.
