Puerta de Córdoba de Carmona Monument · Carmona, Campiña de Carmona, Seville 1st-century AD Roman triumphal gate, built under Augustus or Tiberius in the walls of Carmo, flanked by two semi-octagonal towers. The 1504 earthquake brought down one of its towers, and in 1603 the central arches collapsed; both instances of damage were repaired, and between 1796 and 1800 the architect José de Echamorro gave it its current Neoclassical appearance, with a round arch, paired columns, and a balcony beneath a triangular pediment. Restored in 2000, it now houses an interpretation center and has been a Bien de Interés Cultural, Spain's highest level of heritage protection, since 1931. Photo: Antonio M.
