King Philip III created the marquisate of Villanueva del Ariscal in 1629, after Jorge de Portugal had bought the territory in 1537 for 9.2 million maravedís; in 1831 the town ceased to depend on the administration of the Order of Santiago and passed to ordinary jurisdiction.
