Pilas, capital mundial de la aceituna de mesa Village · Pilas, Aljarafe, Seville Image of Pilas, not of the place itself. Municipality of 14,222 inhabitants (2025) and 45.94 km², at 63 m altitude (ranging from 35 to 137 m). Mentioned by Pliny the Elder as 'Pilias,' its town center developed around an 11th-century Almohad qubba; in 1502 the first documented shipment of soap to America left from Seville. In the 17th century, under the jurisdiction of the Order of Santiago, the painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo married a woman from Pilas. In the 1990s it was promoted as the 'World Capital of the Table Olive,' for its manzanilla, gordal, and verdial varieties. Photo: CarlosVdeHabsburgo (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Pilas
