The settlement, already fortified in Roman times and with a documented Visigothic necropolis, was in the Islamic period the Hisn al-Qasar ('the fortress of the citadel'), capital of one of the four judicial districts of the Aljarafe. It was reconquered in 1251 together with Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
