Born in Ronda in 1754 and died in 1839, he is credited with establishing modern bullfighting on foot with the muleta, heir to the style begun by his grandfather Francisco Romero. He retired in 1799 after fighting thousands of bulls without serious injury and went on to direct the Seville bullfighting school between 1830 and 1832.
