Discovered in 1959, it preserves cave paintings that, according to recent studies, could be around 42,000 years old. It was declared a monumento histórico-artístico (Monumento Histórico-Artístico, Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) in 1961 and is today a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) with the category of archaeological zone since November 2006.
