Peñarrubia, el pueblo sumergido
Historical milestone
Peñarrubia was an independent municipality since 1857, separated from Teba, until the construction of the Guadalteba reservoir forced the evacuation of its roughly 1,800 residents starting in 1971; the municipality officially disappeared in 1973 and its term passed to Campillos. The church, the school and the Guardia Civil barracks remained standing until the flooding, and in times of drought ruins of the village and its cemetery still emerge from beneath the waters.
