Settled since the Upper Palaeolithic, it was the Roman Suel before the Christian conquest of 1487 and the 1492 land distribution among fifty settlers. The historic centre, declared a historic-artistic complex in 1969, contrasts with the tourist growth of Mijas Costa: the municipality now has around 95,000 inhabitants, though Mijas Pueblo itself has just over 3,500.
